Historical NoteOlga Boznanska was a significant Polish painter best known for her portraits and still life paintings. Boznanska's style was influenced by several nineteenth century artists, including James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Édouard Manet and shows the qualities of both realism and impressionism.

This painting was a gift from Boznanska to Sara Delano Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt’s mother, while Mrs. Roosevelt was visiting Paris in 1921. FDR found the painting among his mother’s things after she died in 1941.
