Physical DescriptionA model of the Hudson River Packet Sloop, EXPERIMENT (1780). The ship is a small, single-masted schooner made of light-toned wood with a hull decorated with black and blue stripes, elaborate rigging, and no sails. The name of ship is on the stern. The model sits affixed to a small cradle base, which in turn is attached to a larger wooden base. A copper plaque attached to the larger base is inscribed: "FIRST ANNUAL AWARD / 1937 / NEW YORK ROD AND GUN EDITOR'S ASSOCIATION / TO / FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT / FOR THE OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE / DEVELOPMENT AND PROTECTION OF THE / NATION'S OUTDOOR RESOURCES." Historical NoteThis model of the EXPERIMENT was made by Nikita Carpenko, a master model builder from Nantucket Island. The model was presented to President Roosevelt in 1937 by the New York Rod and Gun Editor’s Association for his contributions to the development and protection of the nation’s outdoor resources.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 27, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
