Physical DescriptionA three-masted, square-rigged wooden model of the frigate, RALEIGH. The ship has a black and gray hull with white and gold-tone decorations, sails unfurled, and the name painted on the stern. The model is fixed to a wooden cradle mounted on a wooden base which has a perimeter groove to allow for the placement of a protective bonnet.
Historical NoteRoosevelt purchased this model on April 13, 1933 (during his first hectic weeks as president) for $125 from the S & G Gump Company of San Francisco, California. The firm’s president, A. Livingston Gump, knew of Roosevelt’s interest in ship models and offered to sell him the RALEIGH at cost. The RALEIGH was one of 13 frigates ordered by the Continental Congress during the early days of the United States Navy.
