Physical DescriptionA ship model of the 19th century Dutch corvette, PALLAS. The ship's hull is a combination of natural wood and black with white painted trim. The model has been remasted, and has unfurled sails. 30 guns surround the ship. A gilded ship's figurehead is located at the bow, and the Dutch flag hangs on rigging off the stern. The model sits in a wooden cradle base.

Historical NoteThis model was presented to the Roosevelt Library by the government of the Netherlands in 1949. During World War II, when Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and other members of the Dutch royal family were exiled in the United States, Juliana told President Roosevelt that when the Nazis were driven out of her country and she could return to the Netherlands, she would send him the finest ship model she could find. This model was the fulfillment of her promise.
