DescriptionA red and white transferware plate commemorating the June 1939 British Royal Visit to the United States. At the center of the plate are portrait images of the King and Queen within a laurel leaf wreath topped by a crown and a banner below with the words “KING GEORGE VI / AND / QUEEN ELIZABETH.” Encircling the portraits is text that reads: COMMEMORATING THE VISIT OF THEIR MAJESTIES TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1939.
Around the edge of the plate is a wide border featuring images of (clockwise from top) an eagle, the Washington Monument, the White House, and the Statue of Liberty, each separated by a design of acorns and oak leaves.
The manufacturer's mark is on the reverse: ROYAL IVORY / JOHN M. MADDOCK & SONS LTD / MADE IN ENGLAND.
