DescriptionA cream-colored stamp cover from Cuba addressed to (typed): Mr. Frank D. Roosevelt. / Presidente de la Republica de los / Estados Unidos del Norte America.- / WASHINGTON D. C. The return address is printed in the upper left corner: LOGIA "PERSEVERANCIA" / CONSTITUYENTE DE LA MUY RESPETABLE / GRAN LOGIA DE LA ISLA DE DUBA / AVE. DE LA INDEPENDENCIA No. 6 / HABANA - CUBA. Adhered on the envelope are two Cuban 1917-1918 green 1c José Marti stamps (Scott 264). The envelope is postmarked Habana [Havana], Cuba, November 13, 1936 with a special cancellation: SOLO SON HABANOS LEGITIMOS / LOS TABACOS FABRICADOS EN CUBA / THE ONLY GENUINE HAVANA / CIGARS ARE THOSE MADE IN CUBA.
On the reverse, a black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R125" is written in pencil in the lower right corner, and the number "DCW-2" is written in pencil near the top edge.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.On the reverse, a black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
