DescriptionA beige-colored stamp cover from Poland addressed to (typed): Mr. / Franklin Roosevelt / President U. S. A. / Washington. / White House. / Rigour. personellement. / Charge. Adhered in the upper right of the envelope is a Polish 1938 blue 55g Union of Nobles, Commoners and Peasants postage stamp (Scott 328). The envelope is postmarked Lwow, Poland, December 26, 1933 and also has a black ink Lwow registration stamp. There is no return address on the envelope.
On the reverse of the envelope are five additional Polish stamps: one 10g blue Dom Pocztowca stamp, and four 10g red Na Szkoly stamps. Also on the reverse are two postmarks for New York, NY, January 5, 1934, and one postmark for Washington, DC, January 6, 1934. A black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R56" is written in pencil in the lower right corner.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.On the reverse of the envelope are five additional Polish stamps: one 10g blue Dom Pocztowca stamp, and four 10g red Na Szkoly stamps. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
