DescriptionA ship's figurehead carved from live oak. In shades of brown, the figurehead depicts the head and bust of a young, unknown woman with an elaborate hair style. A metal ring protrudes from the back of her neck.
The figurehead rests unfixed on a rough wooden base, painted brown, made especially for displaying the figurehead.
Label TextThis nineteenth century figurehead once graced the bow of the WITCH, an American privateer. Franklin D. Roosevelt purchased the figurehead for $25 at the December 4, 1929 sale of the American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, New York.The figurehead rests unfixed on a rough wooden base, painted brown, made especially for displaying the figurehead.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 28, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
