DescriptionAn original watercolor painting of the brig, USS NIAGARA. It depicts an angled side view of the two-masted, square-rigged sailing ship at full sail on open water. An American flag flies at the stern. Another sailing ship is seen in the left background. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right: Robert N. Blair. The title of the painting is handwritten in ink on the reverse: Captain Perry's Ship the Niagara.
The painting is matted in a cream-colored mat.
Label TextThe NIAGARA (1813) played a pivotal role at the September 10, 1813 Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. When the flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the American commander, was reduced to wreckage, Perry transferred by rowboat to the NIAGARA to continue the battle.The painting is matted in a cream-colored mat.
This painting of the NIAGARA was presented to President Roosevelt in May 1941 by the artist, Robert Blair.
