DescriptionA hand-colored line engraving portrait of John Paul Jones on board the USS ALLIANCE. The engraving is titled and captioned in French below the image: PAUL JONES Americain / Capitaine Commandant la Frégatte l'Alliance Celêbre par son intrepidité dans les Combats. It features Jones, dressed in a sailor's outfit, standing on the deck of the ship with a mast and rigging visible behind him and smoke swirling at his sides. In his right hand, Jones is holding a sword, the tip of which rests on a small cannon mounted to the railing of the ship.
The engraving is placed under a black and clear glass "mat" and framed in 1¼" black wood frame with gilt beading trim.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong collector of prints, engravings, and paintings illustrating the history of the United States Navy. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was one of his favorite naval heroes. Despite the fact that the impression of Jones in this engraving is not a good likeness, it was one of the FDR's favorite prints.The engraving is placed under a black and clear glass "mat" and framed in 1¼" black wood frame with gilt beading trim.
