DescriptionA black and white line engraving portrait of John Paul Jones, commander of the USS BONHOMME RICHARD, boarding the HMS SERAPIS on September 23, 1779 off the coast of England. The engraving is titled below the image: PAUL JONES THE PIRATE. It features Jones standing on the deck of SERAPIS on which a battle is taking place all around him. Smoke from various explosions is billowing up and sailors are seen in combat with each other. In Jones' right hand he is holding a sword, and in his left hand is a pistol. A skull and crossbones design is featured on Jones' hat and uniform. Printed below the image is the publisher's information: Pub. by A. PARK, 47, Leonard St. / Tabernacle Walk, London.
The print is matted, glazed, and framed in a modern 1 1/8" gold and black wood frame.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong collector of prints, engravings, and paintings illustrating the history of the United States Navy. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was one of his favorite naval heroes. FDR purchased this engraving on April 18, 1906 for $3.25.The print is matted, glazed, and framed in a modern 1 1/8" gold and black wood frame.
