DescriptionA model of the presidential yacht, USS POTOMAC. The wooden model of a two-masted steam ship with two smoke stacks has a gray, red, and black hull and some deck detail. The Presidential flag flies from the rear mast. The ship's name is found on the life rafts on both sides of ship. The model is mounted in a wood and glass case. A paper label attached to interior base of the case reads: PRESENTED TO / THE PRESIDENT / FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / BY / ROBERT J. O'LEARY / 1939.
Label TextThis model of the USS POTOMAC was presented to President Roosevelt in 1939 by the maker, Robert J. O’Leary, an 18-year-old Sea Scout who worked on the model in a workshop at the Merrimac River Coast Guard Station. The model was constructed from plans furnished by Lieutenant Commander John A. Gelley of the Coast Guard.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 17, 1942. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
