DescriptionA two-masted, square-rigged wooden model of the brig, USS WASP. The lower part of dark hull is sheathed in metal. The ship has intricate rigging, no sails, and sixteen guns. The name of ship on is on the stern. The model is accompanied by small wood cradle with black finish.

Stored separately is a wooden base with a perimeter groove for placement of a case. Mounted to the underside of the base is information on the WASP typed on letterhead from the Office of the President of S. & G. Gump Co., San Francisco, California.
Label TextThis model was given to President Roosevelt in June 1933 by A. Livingston Gump of the S&G Gump Company of San Francisco, California. Roosevelt had just returned to Washington D.C. after a well-publicized sailing trip to Campobello Island at the end of his dramatic first 100 days in office. The WASP, built in 1806, was famous for its capture of the HMS FROLIC during the War of 1812.
