DescriptionA gavel attached to a wooden gavel block that shows signs of use. The block is set with a silver plate with an engraved historical notation that reads: THIS GAVEL WAS USED BY THE CHAIRMAN / OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION / SAN FRANCISCO, JULY 1920. AT THE TIME OF / THE NOMINATION OF FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / FOR VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. The manufacturer's mark is pressed into the silver ring attaching the gavel to the block: GLEASON-WALLACE / ALBANY.
Label TextIn 1920, Franklin Roosevelt was the Democratic Party’s candidate for Vice President of the United States on an unsuccessful ticket headed by Ohio Governor James M. Cox. FDR had the plaque put on the gavel block to indicate the gavel's history.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 28, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
