DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1942 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS HOBSON (DD-464). On the left side of the envelope is a brown illustrated cachet with a profile view of the ship on open water over which is flying an eagle with a banner in its beak that states: “CONQUER WE MUST, FOR OUR CAUSE IT IS JUST.” Additional text on the cachet reads: U.S.S. HOBSON / REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR / JANUARY 22, 1942 / NAVY YARD, CHARLESTON, S.C. / IN COMMISSION. In the lower left of the cachet is a coat of arms design representing the Hobson family name in a nod to the ship’s namesake, U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Richmond Pearson Hobson. The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: D. F. GRIFFIN.

The envelope is addressed to (typed): Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt, / The Commander in Chief / of the Army and Navy, / The White House, / Washington, D. C. There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 bister brown 1½¢ Martha Washington Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 805). The envelope is postmarked U.S. Navy, January 22, 1942.
