DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the October 5, 1936 christening of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS PERMIT (SS-178). On the left side of the envelope is a stamped brown ink cachet consisting of an illustration of a champagne bottle with an image of a ship launching on the bottle label. Brown and blue text on the bottle reads: “U. S. / P / NAVY / LAUNCHING / 'I CHRISTEN THEE' / USS PERMIT / 178 / GROTON, CONN.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "Hon Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1930 brown 1½¢ Warren G. Harding stamp (Scott 684). The envelope is postmarked Groton, Connecticut, October 5, 1936.

The return address is ink stamped in black on the reverse of the envelope: “S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.”
