DescriptionAn original watercolor painting of a ship's carved stern piece. It shows a gilt eagle holding a shield in one claw and two draped U.S. flags in the other. The eagle also holds a blue ribbon in its beak. Handwritten in pencil on the reverse: Woodcarving Stern Piece / Peabody Museum / Irving I. Smith / Federal Art Project / Index of America.
