DescriptionAn original pen and ink caricature of Donald M. Nelson in the form of a dog. Nelson's face - sporting wing-shaped eyebrows and a pair of eyeglasses - is placed on the body of a bulldog shown kicking up dirt. The drawing is unsigned by the artist.

Nelson's name is handwritten twice on the reverse of the caricature for identification purposes, once in pencil (possibly by Al Hirschfeld) and once in ink.
Label TextThis caricature of Donald M. Nelson is one of eight pen and ink caricatures (MO 1944.26.6.1-8) that Al Hirschfeld drew of some of Franklin D. Roosevelt's distinguished friends and prominent visitors to the White House. The caricatures were the basis of comedy slide effects used at the National Press Club preview of this subject. The caricatures were sent to FDR in June 1943 by Carter T. Barron, the Washington, DC representative of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

In May 1940, President Roosevelt appointed American businessman Donald M. Nelson (1888-1959) to a post at the Treasury Department where he served as acting director of the procurement division, managing sales of raw materials to Britain and its allies for use in their fight against the Axis. In January, 1942, following America's entry into the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Nelson became chairman of the newly-created War Production Board.
