DescriptionAn original black and white cartoon titled at the top, “GROWING DARK.” It depicts Franklin D. Roosevelt (identified as “F.D.R.”) finely dressed in a three-piece suit and hat. He is walking along with a worried expression on his face, wiping the sweat from his brow with a handkerchief in his left hand, while in his right hand he is holding up, as an offering, a bouquet of flowers labeled “APPEASESMENT OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY.” FDR is looking up at the sun, marked “NEW DEAL 1940 / PRESIDENTIAL HOPES,” which is in the process of being eclipsed by the head of the Republican elephant (“G.O.P. ECLIPSE”) labeled “TAFT-DEWEY / BRICKER - / LODGE.” Behind FDR is the silhouette of the U.S. Capitol building, in front of which sits a small furry creature marked “LEO” who says, “A COURTIN’ HE DOTH GO?”. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner: “EGLI – / ‘39.”
