DescriptionAn original black and white cartoon titled at the top, “NO CLOSURES.” It depicts a factory building labeled “1941 / NATIONAL EMERGENCY DEFENSE.” Standing in the doorway of the factory is a heavyset man representing John L. Lewis (“BOSS LEWIS”) wearing overalls marked “C.I.O.” and holding his right arm up in defiance with a document titled “GOV’T DEFY” clutched in his right hand. A sign next to the doorway reads, “A ‘CLOSED SHOP’ OR ELSE – / J. L. LEWIS.” Standing in front of the factory building is Franklin D. Roosevelt wearing a “F.D.R.” button and with an “ANTI STRIKERS” piece of paper poking out of his left jacket pocket. FDR is holding a large club in his left hand (labeled “CONGRESSIONAL ‘BIG STICK’”) and is saluting the American flag flying above the building with his right arm while saying, “LEST YOU FORGET – THERE IS NO CLOSED DOOR TO PATRIOTISM!” The artist’s signature is in the lower left corner: “’NORMAN’.”
