DescriptionAn original black and white cartoon titled at the top, “National Defense Inspection Tour.” It depicts Franklin D. Roosevelt at the reins of a rapidly moving covered wagon pulled by a mule (or donkey). Written on the side of the wagon: “THIRD TERM ER BUST / POLITICAL ‘COVERED’ WAGON.” Two figures labeled “LAWRENCE” [David Leo Lawrence] and “GUFFEY” [Joseph F. Guffey] are seen holding on to the back of the wagon for dear life. The wagon is moving in the same direction as a wooden sign reading, “THE WILLKIE TRAIL / ← PITTSBURGH.” The artist’s signature is in the lower right corner: “HUNGERFORD.”

On the reverse is a pencil sketch of an earlier cartoon concept for the same theme. The sketch shows FDR at the reins of a covered wagon hitched to a mule (or donkey). Written on the side of the wagon: “THIRD TERM ER BUST / POLITICAL COVERED WAGON.” FDR is saying “AH- I’M GLAD TO SEE THIS COUNTRY PREPARED FOR WAR!” On the ground besides the wagon is a man labeled “GUFFEY” pointing to “WILLKIE TRACKS” on Goat Hill. In front of the wagon is another figure labeled “LAWR” pointing to a series of buildings and exclaiming, “OLD FORT PITT SIR.”
Label TextThis cartoon was likely published in 1940 in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette which the artist, Cy Hungerford, worked for at the time.
