DescriptionA cutout from an American Consular Service envelope. The buff-colored envelope remnant has a partial address (handwritten in ink): “The Honorable / The Secretary of State.” Above the address is a red and white registration sticker with “R / Stockholm 3 / N:r 168.” Adhered at the top are five Swedish postage stamps: two 1933 green 5 öre Catching Sunlight in Bowl stamps (Scott 236), one 1925 rose 15 öre King Gustav V stamp (Scott 168), and two 1925 dark blue 25 öre King Gustav V stamps (Scott 175). The envelope is postmarked Stockholm, Sweden, February 10, 1934.
On the reverse of the envelope cutout is a black ink stamped message that states: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.On the reverse of the envelope cutout is a black ink stamped message that states: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y.
After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover remnant, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
