DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1939 launching of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS BUCK (DD-420). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red cachet consisting of an illustration of activity on the deck of the sloop-of-war USS BROOKLYN during the American Civil War with a caption below that explains the reasoning behind the naming of the USS BUCK: QUARTER-MASTER JAMES BUCK SERIOUSLY WOUNDED, STANDING AT THE WHEEL OF THE U.S.S. BROOKLYN DURING ENGAGEMENT WITH FORT JACKSON BELOW NEW ORLEANS, APRIL 24 AND 25, 1862. Additional text on the cachet reads: PHILADELPHIA NAVY YARD / LAUNCHING / DESTROYER NO 420 / U.S.S. BUCK / MAY 22, 1939 / CACHET of PHILADELPHIA NAVY YARD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION.
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in ink): Franklin D. Roosevelt / White House / Washington / D. C. There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: a 1938 green 1¢ George Washington stamp (Scott 804), and a 1938 rose carmine 2¢ John Adams stamp (Scott 806). The envelope is postmarked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 22, 1939, with a "BUY U.S. SAVINGS / BONDS / ASK YOUR POSTMASTER" cancellation.
