Descriptiona) A stamp cover commemorating the U.S. Navy. On the left side of the envelope is a blue ink stamped cachet consisting of an illustration with two vertical “openings” through which are seen an airplane and blimp in the sky (upper section), and a Navy ship on open water (lower section). Naval imagery of a life preserver (with “U.S.N.” inside), a ship’s wheel, and two anchors surrounds the illustration, as well as text that reads: “OUR – NATION’S – DEFENSE. / U. S. NAVY / Philadelphia, Pa.” The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: “HUTNICK.”
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "The President of the United States / Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Executive Mansion / Washington / D. C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1930 brown 1½¢ Warren G. Harding stamp (Scott 684). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. MINNEAPOLIS, October 27, 1934 with a "NAVY YARD / PHILA. PA." cancellation.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: "S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILADELPHIA, PA." Also on the reverse is “100” stamped in black ink.
b) Inside the envelope is a white cardstock insert with a printed message: "In appreciation for the past or future courtesy. / S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 Lansdowne Ave. / West Phila., Pa."
