DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the June 20, 1938 keel laying of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS SEALION (SS-195). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red stamped cachet featuring an illustration of a keel being laid in a shipyard. Above, on, and below the image is text that reads: “FOR OUR NATIONAL DEFENSE / KEEL LAID. / U.S. NAVY / U.S.S. SEALION / SS-195 / ELECTRIC BOAT CO. / GROTON, CONN. / SPONSORED BY • R.C.D. 70.” The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: “DR. HUTNICK.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1937 violet 3¢ Ordinance of 1787 Sesquicentennial Issue stamp (Scott 795). The envelope is postmarked Groton, Connecticut, June 20, 1938.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: “S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.”
