DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating Independence Day 1934 on the U.S. Navy cruiser, USS HOUSTON (CL/CA-30). On the left side of the envelope is a green ink stamped cachet consisting of an illustration of a star with a partial silhouette of a Navy ship at the center and exploding firecrackers at the exterior bottom corners. Text on the cachet reads: “1776 • INDEPENDENCE DAY • 1934 / JULY FOURTH / USS HOUSTON.” The cachet designer’s name is printed along the left side of the star: “C. W. RICHELL.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in black ink): “The President / U.S.S. Houston.” There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1934 deep violet 3¢ Mothers of America Issue stamp (Scott 737). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. HOUSTON, July 4, 1934 with an "INDEPENDENCE DAY" cancellation.
