DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1939 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS MUSTIN (DD-413). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red stamped cachet consisting of a small illustration of a Navy ship with text that reads: “UNITED STATES NAVY / FIRST DAY POSTAL SERVICE / USS MUSTIN / DD 413 / “COMMISSIONED” / KEEL LAID DEC. 20, 1937 / LAUNCHED DEC. 8, 1938 / PORTSMOUTH NAVY YARD / NORFOLK, VA. / ---- R. C. D. 70 ---.”
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 bister brown 1½¢ Martha Washington Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 805). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. MUSTIN, September 15, 1939 with a "FIRST DAY IN COMMISSION" cancellation.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: "S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA."
