DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1934 Presidential Cruise aboard the U.S. Navy cruiser, USS HOUSTON (CL/CA-30) and its stop in Portland, Oregon. The envelope has two cachets. On the left side of the envelope is a printed red, white, and blue American flag. To the right of that is a purple ink stamped cachet with an illustration of a rose and the words “FOR YOU A ROSE IN PORTLAND GROWS.”

In the address portion of the envelope is a blue ink stamped message that reads: “PORTLAND GREETS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT ABOARD THE U.S.S. HOUSTON.” The sender’s name and address are handwritten in the lower left corner of the envelope: “FRANK McGREGOR / BANNING / CALIF. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1933 violet 3¢ National Recovery Act Issue stamp (Scott 732). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. HOUSTON, August 3, 1934 with a "PORTLAND / OREGON" cancellation.
