DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the February 28, 1942 commissioning of the U.S. Navy light cruiser, USS SAN JUAN (CL-54). On the left side of the envelope is a red cachet with an illustration of an eagle partially encircled by stars. Text below the image reads: “UNITED STATES NAVY USS SAN JUAN / ---- R.C.D. 70 ----"
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): “The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D. C.” Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: a 1938 deep orange ½¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp (Scott 803), and a 1940 bright blue green 1¢ Statue of Liberty National Defense Issue stamp (Scott 899). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. SAN JUAN, “Commissioned” February 28, 1942. The envelope has an additional postmark, “PASSED BY NAVAL CENSOR,” with a handwritten signature approval in the center.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: “S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.”
