Descriptiona) A stamp cover commemorating the 1941 launching of the U.S. Navy battleship, USS MASSACHUSETTS (BB-59). On the left side of the envelope is a round red and blue cachet featuring a blue silhouette illustration of a Navy ship within a red outline map of Massachusetts. Text above, below, and encircling the illustration reads: “U.S.S. MASSACHUSETTS / LAUNCHED / FORE RIVER / MASS / SPONSOR – MRS. CHARLES FRANCIS ADAMS.” The cachet designer’s name is at the bottom of the illustration: “R. Cholmers.” Typed and handwritten below the cachet: “Personal. / see inside).” There is no return address on the envelope

The envelope is addressed to (typed): “President Franklin Roosevelt, / White House, / Washington, D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1940 red 2¢ Defense postage stamp (Scott 900). The envelope is postmarked U. S. Navy, September 23, 1941 with "USS MASS. / LAUNCHED" cancellation.


b) Inside the envelope is a blue paper insert advertising Folcut Covers, “Cachets of Distinction,” in Kittery Point, Maine.
