DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the May 19, 1939 commissioning of the U.S. Navy light cruiser, USS ST. LOUIS (CL-49). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red stamped cachet consisting of a small illustration of a Navy ship with text above and below that reads: “UNITED STATES NAVY / FIRST DAY POSTAL SERVICE / USS-ST. LOUIS / COMMISSIONED / NORFOLK, VA. / KEEL LAID – DECEMBER 10, 1936 / LAUNCHED – APRIL 15, 1938 / NEWPORT NEWS, VA. / SPONSORED BY • R. C. D. 70.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1937 bright violet 3¢ Farragut & Porter Navy Issue stamp (Scott 792). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. SAINT LOUIS, May 19, 1939, with a "FIRST DAY IN COMMISSION" cancellation.

The return address is ink stamped in purple on the reverse of the envelope: "S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA."
