DescriptionA primitive watercolor painting showing the ca. 1804 engagement between an unidentified American frigate and a ship from Tripolitania, one of the Barbary states of North Africa. It depicts a side view of a three-masted American frigate in the left foreground, with sails furled and an American flag flying at the stern. At the right middle ground is a Barbary vessel, with both sails and oars, flying a red flag with a single yellow horizontal stripe. A mountainous shoreline is shown in the background. The painting is unsigned and untitled, but is apparently contemporaneous.
The painting is mounted in a white window mat.
