DescriptionA small sepia tone pen and ink and watercolor sketch of Algonac, the home of Warren Delano II, in Balmville (Newburgh), New York. The title, date, and artist's name are written in the lower right: Algonac 1851 by Vaux.
The sketch is glazed and framed in a 1/2" wood frame covered in gold leaf.
Label TextLocated in Balmville, New York - a hamlet of Newburgh - the property on which Algonac sits was purchased by Warren Delano II (1809-1898), the grandfather of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Delano hired architects Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux to improve the existing home and grounds and create an Italianate-style country estate which was completed in 1852. FDR's mother, Sara, was born there in 1854, and married James Roosevelt there in 1880. In 1916, a fire destroyed the home. It was rebuilt by Warren Delano III.The sketch is glazed and framed in a 1/2" wood frame covered in gold leaf.
