DescriptionA painting of the conflict at sea between the American sloop-of-war, USS FROLIC, and the British frigate, HMS ORPHEUS, on April 20, 1814 in the Florida Strait. It depicts side views of the slightly overlapped ships, both three-masted sailing ships with sails partially unfurled, traveling in the same direction. The FROLIC is on the left and flies an American flag, while the ORPEHUS is on the right and flies a British flag. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower left corner of the image: Isiah Whyte. Written in the lower right corner of the image: Boston. The title is hand written in ink below the image: The American sloop "Frolic" (22 guns) engaging H.B.M.'s frigate "Orpheus", 20th January, 1814.

The painting is framed in a 1½" burled wood frame with gilt inner trim.
