DescriptionA painting of the brig, SUKEY, entering Newburyport, Massachusetts. It depicts a side view of the two-masted sailing ship with a black and gold hull. The ship is at full sail and an early American flag flies at the stern. To the right of the painting, and slightly behind the ship, is a small two-masted sailing vessel. A shoreline stretches along the background of the painting. The full title of the painting is handwritten along the bottom: BRIG SUKEY, CAPTURED BY THE PRIVATEER WASHINGTON JANY. 15 1776,. ENTERING NEWBURYPORT UNDER A PRIZE CREW.

The painting is mounted in a white window mat.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt purchased this painting from the Carey collection at the Anderson Galleries, New York, New York on March 22, 1922 for $160.

Though undated, the painting is not believed to be contemporaneous with the event.
