DescriptionA painting depicting an unidentified American Navy sloop-of war. It depicts a slightly-angled side view of a three-masted sailing ship on a choppy waters. Some of the sails are unfurled and an American flag flies at the stern. Behind the ship, on both the left and right, are a variety of other large and small sailing vessels. In the right background is what appears to be a view of Gibraltar. The painting is unsigned and undated.
The painting is framed in a 2½" gilt wood frame. A typed note on the reverse indicates that naval historian, Dudley W. Knox, thought the sloop-of-war represented might be either the USS FAIRFIELD (1828) or the USS FALMOUTH (1827). Handwritten on the note is "#21" and "Estate No. 378." Also attached to the back of the frame is a white sticker with "149" printed on it.
