DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the July 22, 1936 keel laying of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS SKIPJACK (SS-184). On the left side of the envelope is a light blue and dark blue stamped cachet featuring an illustration of a keel being laid in a shipyard. Above, on, and below the image is text that reads: “FOR OUR NATIONAL DEFENSE / KEEL LAID. / U.S. NAVY / USS SKIPJACK / SS-184 / GROTON, CONN.” The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: “DR. HUTNICK.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1930 brown 1½¢ Warren G. Harding stamp (Scott 684). The envelope is postmarked Groton, Connecticut, July 22, 1936.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: “S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.”
