Physical DescriptionA symbolic oil painting commemorating battles in the Philippines during World War II. The painting depicts a Filipino family - father, mother, and child - in an outrigger canoe on an open body of water with a coastline of cliffs in the background. The family is looking up at the sky in which symbolic images are visible, including the Statue of Liberty, the American flag, soldiers in combat, and a military fighter plane. The artist's signature is in the lower left corner: "E. Salgado 42 / Ann Arbor, Mich."

The painting is framed in a 2 1/2" light colored wood frame. Attached to the reverse of the frame is a framer's label for James B. Saunders of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Historical NoteFilipino artist Eduardo Salgado gifted this painting to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. Salgado, who was residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the time, created the painting as a memento of the gallant fight of American and Filipino soldiers during the 1942 Battles of Corregidor and Bataan during World War II.
