Physical Descriptiona) A stamp cover commemorating the April 9, 1941 commissioning of the U.S. Navy battleship, USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55). On the left side of the legal-sized envelope is a blue, red, yellow-gold, and white cachet consisting of an illustration of a battleship on open water. Below the ship is text, flanked by two seahorses, that reads: “U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA / ‘YE OLD TARHEEL’ / Keel laid Oct. 27, 1937. / Commissioned April 9, 1941. / Captain O.M. Hustvedt, Commanding. / N★C.” The captain’s original ink signature is below the cachet.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): "The President Franklin D. Roosevelt, / The White House / Washington, D.C." There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 purple 3¢ Thomas Jefferson stamp (Scott 807). The envelope is postmarked twice: U. S. S. NORTH CAROLINA, April 9, 1941 with a "MAIL SERVICE / FIRST DAY" cancellation, and U. S. S. NORTH CAROLINA, April 14, 1941.
b) Inside the envelope is the inaugural edition of a four-page newsletter for the U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA entitled "THE TARHEEL,” Volume 1, Number 1, dated Saturday, April 12, 1941.
