DescriptionA large model of the ship, SHENANDOAH. The four-masted ship has a black and brass hull, a good amount of deck detail, no sails, and an American flag flying off the rear mast. The name of the ship is found on both sides of the bow. Painted on the stern: SHENANDOAH / BATH. The model is affixed to a small wood base, which in turn is mounted to a larger wooden base which has a perimeter groove to allow for the placement of a protective bonnet.

Placed on the larger base is a is framed painting by H. Shimidzu of the SHENANDOAH in a rough sea. Also attached to the larger base are two inscribed brass plaques. One reads: SHENANDOAH / ARTHUR SEWALL & CO. / BATH MAINE NOV. 1890 / LENGTH 299.7' BREADTH 49.1' / DRAUGHT 29.1' TONNAGE 49.1' / SCALE 1/8" = 1 FOOT / TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES / THE HONORABLE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / PRESENTED BY THE WARRANT OFFICERS MESS / U.S.S. CHESTER DECEMBER 1936. The other, smaller plaque reads: SHENANDOAH / BY / CHIEF BOS' W.S. BURNS / U.S NAVY / 1935.
Label TextThis model was built by Chief Boatswain W. S. Burns of the United States Navy and presented to President Roosevelt by the warrant officers of the USS CHESTER in December 1936. The painting of the SHENANDOAH mounted to the right half of the model’s base was created by H. Shimidzu.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 27, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
