DescriptionA ship model of the destroyer, USS. BAINBRIDGE (DD-246). The wooden model of a two-masted steam ship has a two-tone gray hull, four smoke stacks, no sails, an American flag flying from the stern, and the number "246" painted on both sides at the bow. The model is mounted on a wooden base to which is affixed a brass name plaque: U.S.S. BAINBRIDGE. The model and base are fixed inside a wood and glass case.
Label TextThis is most likely the model sent to President Roosevelt in November 1933 by Raymond Fitzgerald, a prisoner in Sing Sing State Prison in Ossining, New York. In a note accompanying the model, Fitzgerald wrote that he made every part of the model by hand. In 1933, this ship model sat on the fireplace mantle in the Study in the White House Residence.
