DescriptionA color poster featuring the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima by four U.S. Marines. White text running along the bottom reads: 7th / WAR LOAN / NOW--ALL TOGETHER. The artwork is by C.C. Beall, done from an Associated Press photo. U.S. Government Printing Office: 1945-O-637980. WFD 11A. Official U.S. Treasury Poster.
Label TextIn May 1945 the Treasury Department opened its 7th War Loan Drive. This poster was its centerpiece. It commemorated one of the war’s most dramatic moments—the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the battle for Iwo Jima. The bloody fight for that Pacific island raged for nearly a month in February and March 1945 and resulted in the deaths of nearly 7,000 Americans.

On February 23, 1945, photographer Joe Rosenthal shot a photo of six servicemen raising the flag. Reproduced in hundreds of newspapers and magazines, it became the most famous image of the Pacific War. Artist Cecil Calvert Beall recast it as an artwork for this poster and the three surviving men in the photograph toured the nation to promote the 7th War Loan Drive.
