DescriptionA gavel made from natural wood with a clear finish and eight rings carved into the handle.
Label TextThis gavel was made from a portion of the wood planking of the British Royal Navy ship of the line, HMS AUGUSTA. The AUGUSTA was sunk on October 22, 1777 at the Battle of Red Bank in New Jersey during the American Revolutionary War. The gavel was sent to Franklin D. Roosevelt in July 1941 by Francis H. White of Gloucester, New Jersey.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 27, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
