DescriptionA gouache painting of a United States Navy ship of the line in the Bay of Naples. It depicts a side view of a three-masted sailing ship with a black and white painted hull. The ship is at full sail and an American flag flies at the stern. The city of Naples can be seen in the background, along with an erupting volcano.
The painting is glazed and framed in a 3 1/3" ornately-patterned gilt wood frame with decorative gilt metal corner pieces. The frame appears to be original to the painting. A gilt wood plaque attached to the bottom of the frame has an inscription that reads: U.S. SHIP OF THE LINE / "DELAWARE" [see Historical Note].
Label TextThough this painting identifies the ship depicted as the USS DELAWARE (1820), correspondence with the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, and further research, indicates that the ship may actually be the DELAWARE'S sister ship, the USS NORTH CAROLINA (1820).The painting is glazed and framed in a 3 1/3" ornately-patterned gilt wood frame with decorative gilt metal corner pieces.
