DescriptionA hand colored aquatint engraving of the USS CHESAPEAKE being overtaken and boarded by the officers and crew of the HMS SHANNON in June 1813. It depicts a close-up view of the deck of the CHESAPEAKE on which a battle is seen taking place between the crews of the two ships. The full title of the engraving, and the publisher's information, are printed at center below the image: BOARDING and TAKING the AMERICAN SHIP CHESAPEAKE, / by the Officers & Crew of H.M. Ship Shannon, Commanded by Capt. Broke, June 1813. / Published & Sold July 1, 1816 by Edwd Orme, Published to His Majesty & the Prince Regent, Bond Street, corner of Brook Street, London. Printed below the image, lower left: Heath, delt. Printed below the image, lower right: M. Dubourg, sculpt.

The print is matted, glazed, and framed in a 3/4" black wood frame with gilt inner trim.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong collector of prints, engravings, and paintings illustrating the history of the United States Navy. He is believed to have purchased this aquatint of a War of 1812 naval engagement in 1918 from the Old Print Shop for $5. He later selected the engraving for the original naval exhibition in the Library’s museum.
