DescriptionA scale diorama (1:50) of an Italian ship under construction in a shipyard. The bow half of the ship shows the manual construction methods employed in the 1870s, while the stern half is the same boat as it would have been built about 1915-1920 with mechanical equipment. The model is encased in the original wood and glass case.

Activity around the bow section depicts the manual construction methods employed during the 1870s. Action around the stern depicts more modern (ca. 1915-1920) construction methods involving mechanical equipment.

The model was made by Comincini Flaviano. It was presented to President Roosevelt on November 8, 1943 by Mr. Genna, Chairman of the Administrative Counsel of the Royal Navy University Institute, Naples, Italy, (through Col. Edgar E. Hume, G.S.C., Chief, Military Government Sect., Headquarters Fifth Army).
