DescriptionAn original black and white cartoon referencing the resources needed for the New Deal program, the National Recovery Administration (NRA). The cartoon depicts a large ship named “NRA” docked at a pier. Uniformed soldiers, with helmets labeled “STEEL,” “OIL,” and “LUMBER,” are seen marching up a gangplank into the ship. Up on the deck of the ship, a man is leaning over and shouting “ALL ABOARD!” as troops line the railing in front of a stylized eagle with the words “OTHER INDUSTRIES.” On the pier, near the gangplank, is the scene of a large woman (“RUGGED INDIVIDUALISM”) hugging a soldier with a large tag attached to his rucksack that reads “INDUSTRIAL RECRUIT NO. 7934676.” Surrounding the pair are three small, crying children identified as “LAISSEZ-FAIRE,” “CUTTHROAT COMPETITION,” and “SELFISHNESS.” The artist’s unidentifiable signature is in the lower right corner. Also in the lower right corner is a pencil notation: “Aug 22 ’33.”
