The cartoon depicts Japan's Emperor Hirohito dressed in his military uniform and seated upon a throne with Nazi swastikas along the side. Japanese Prime Minister Kiichiro Hiranuma, dressed in an English-style morning suit, is bowing down before the emperor. A view of Mount Fuji is in the background. Running vertically down the left side of the cartoon is stylized text that reads: “EVEN IF CHAMBERLAIN AND ROOSEVELT LEAVE US, THERE IS ALWAYS HONOURABLE B.H.P. [Broken Hill Proprietary Company].” The artist’s stylized signature is in the lower left corner: “MAHONY.”
Label TextThis 1939 cartoon by Australian cartoonist Francis William (Will) Mahony may have been published in the Daily News, a Sydney-based newspaper which Mahony worked for at the time.
