DescriptionA wooden model of the heavy cruiser, USS WICHITA (CA-45). The ship has a black and red hull and gray superstructure. The trim and some of the fittings are metal. It is constructed on a scale of 1/16" to 1'. The underside of the model is attached to two brass pillars mounted within in a glass and wood case.
Label TextThis large model of the USS WICHITA (CA-45) was made for the Navy Department by Frederic A. Craven of La Porte, Indiana in 1939. Craven sent it to President Roosevelt as a gift in January 1941. The WICHITA was constructed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and commissioned in 1939. It was part of the naval expansion program undertaken by the Roosevelt administration during the 1930s.
