DescriptionA three-masted, square-rigged wooden model of the screw sloop-of-war, USS HARTFORD. The ship has a gray hull with gold leaf sheathing on the lower part. The sails are furled and the deck has a single smokestack. The model rests on a stand affixed within a glass and wood case. Attached to the stand are two metal plaques, one with a description of the ship and its voyages and the other inscribed: U.S.S. HARTFORD. Several flags, including an American flag, a blue flag, and four signal/banner flags on a single string, are stored separately for preservation purposes.
Label TextThis model of the USS HARTFORD was built by Juan Salada Pedraza of Havana, Cuba and rigged by Nils Sioberg, a retired U.S. Coast Guard boatswain. The model was presented to President Roosevelt by U.S. District Court Judge Charles Harwood and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Stephen B. Gibbons in July 1938.

This is one of several models of the HARTFORD in Roosevelt’s ship model collection. The HARTFORD held a special interest for the President because a Delano ancestor was involved in its construction. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral David Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
